Weidmüller brings intelligence into production

Weidmüller brings intelligence into production

24.01.2019

For the first time, the electrical engineering enterprise presents a demonstrator for an intelligent plug-in connector at the Hannover Messe Preview, which enables the transmission, measurement and analysis of energy.

Hannover / Detmold, 24 January 2019. Although there are still ten weeks to go before the world's biggest industrial trade fair Hannover Messe opens its doors, visitors were already able to receive a foretaste of the most important trends and tendencies from the 72nd edition of the fair at the official Preview. Under the motto "Integrated Industry – Industrial Intelligence", in Hanover the electrical engineering specialist Weidmüller from Detmold presents a demonstrator for an intelligent plug-in connector, which enables the transmission, measurement and analysis of energy. "Plug-in connectors are the interface between machines, controller and data processing systems and thus form the basis for the functionality, the easy handling and the reliability of the automation technology", explains Weidmüller Press Officer Carsten Nagel. "With the intelligent plug-in connector we adopt the motto of the fair and bring intelligence into production".

The demonstrator presents the practical advantages of contactless transmission of measurement and production data. This includes, among other things, the measurement of conductivity via a plug-in connector, such that further components can be eliminated. The Smart Connector ensures that the electronics, sensors and actuators, as well as the communication interfaces, can be combined in the smallest of spaces. Moreover, integrated monitoring provides an overview of the current functionality level. Faults and failures can therefore be significantly reduced. All this optimises the process on many levels, saves costs and accelerates production. "Integrating sensor and diagnostic functions opens up completely new application fields in industry and makes additional sensors partly superfluous", explains Marc Neu, Product Developer at the Weidmüller Smart Connectivity Competence Center. "With an intelligent plug-in connector, it is possible to detect undesirable behaviour or damage early on and to perform predictive maintenance. This means there is reduced machine downtime and increased efficiency. The plug-in connector also allows seamless transition from the real to the virtual world – without any detours".

The main focus of this year's Hannover Messe is again on products and solutions for Industry 4.0 and therefore for digitalisation. Strategically, Weidmüller is positioned as both a provider and a user in these areas. The hot preparation phase for the coming Hannover Messe starts today with the Preview. "Industrial Intelligence" is the general theme of the fair and is set to advance from a concept to industrial reality over the years to come. "Artificial intelligence and machine learning will gradually find its way into production. In Hanover we will also present other innovations from the field of Machine Learning", explains Nagel.

19.11.2018

At the leading trade fair for automation, Weidmüller will be focusing on intelligent digital solutions based on IoT-capable components, software and services.

Detmold, 19. November 2018 Europe's leading trade fair for electrical automation, SPS IPC Drives, takes place from 27 to 29 November 2018 in Nuremberg. The Weidmüller Group will be presenting new solutions for digitalisation and automation at Stand 351 in Hall 9. In addition to the dialogue with customers, the focus is on digital solutions based on IoT-capable components, software and services. "Using our new 'IoT Demonstrator powered by u-mation', we can demonstrate our automation portfolio including u-control and the u-create studio software tool. We also provide the infrastructure to operate the system, including routers, switches and the innovative ProTop power supply," says Chief Marketing and Sales Officer José Carlos Álvarez Tobar. For the first time, the company will have two stands at the trade fair as solutions for machine control and system visualisation will also be presented in Hall 7 at the Weidmüller GTI Software GmbH stand.

Automation technology plays central role at Weidmüller

The factory will be able to control itself through intelligent networking and will have the flexibility to adapt to new requirements. The automation solution u-mation from the Detmold-based electrical engineering company combines modular automation hardware as well as engineering and visualisation tools with digitalisation solutions, thus enabling all process levels to be connected – from the sensor to the cloud. From control applications to data-based, predictive machine maintenance through industrial analytics, it thus provides the basis for more efficient production concepts. "With the flexible u-control, the modular u-remote I/O system and the multi-touch panel that is intuitive to operate, customers have access to a comprehensive hardware portfolio that offers high levels of flexibility for configuring individual solutions," says Álvarez Tobar. The company will also present a preview of new functions and further developments of its Industrial Analytics solution for the first time. Artificial intelligence and machine learning methods will be featured.

Modular system concepts thanks to decentralised solutions with FieldPower

Other highlights include modularisation and decentralisation in production. In the future, the implementation of modular system concepts will increasingly require decentralised, adaptable solutions that cover a wide range of functions. Existing systems are also due to be expanded on a decentralised basis. At the trade fair, Weidmüller will demonstrate its FieldPower system that offers a solution for implementing decentralised system and automation concepts in a way that is future-proof and economical. "Whether it's a matter of power distribution for robotics, decentralised power electronics or decentralised automation technology – with the FieldPower system, Weidmüller offers a solution for decentralisation and modularisation," says Álvarez Tobar.

Increasing focus on digitalisation infrastructure

The global increase in the number of smart end devices means that networking requirements are becoming increasingly complex. This also poses new challenges for the infrastructure. Conventional Ethernet bus systems will not be able to meet the demands placed on them by automation technology. New solution concepts will be needed in the future. At the trade fair, Weidmüller will use a demonstrator to show initial technological approaches for end-to-end single pair Ethernet cabling ranging from building systems and technology to sensors in factory automation. "The 'single-pair Ethernet' technology, which is being developed jointly with several partners, makes it possible to transmit Ethernet with two wires instead of eight. This reduction allows significant savings in size, weight and price compared to current solutions," says Álvarez Tobar. For the development of smart connector and infrastructure solutions and industrial connectivity, the Detmold-based company has also recently established a Smart Connectivity Competence Center, which will increasingly focus on these topics.

15.10.2018

Close cooperation with the research facilities of CENTRUM INDUSTRIAL IT (CIIT) for the development of smart plug-in connector solutions, infrastructure solutions and industrial electrical connectivity

Lemgo/Detmold, 15 October 2018. The Detmold-based electrical engineering company Weidmüller is expanding its presence within the CENTRUM INDUSTRIAL IT (CIIT) independent research and development centre at the Innovation Campus Lemgo. Weidmüller is setting up a Smart Connectivity Competence Center at the CIIT in order to develop innovations in the field of electrical connectivity and to increase its focus on issues relating to industrial infrastructure. Ten employees from the Device and Field Connectivity division will work even more closely within the CIIT partner network in the future. This is in line with Weidmüller's strategy and follows the company's announcement in December 2017 regarding its plans to increase its activities in Lemgo and promote the development of the Innovation Campus Lemgo. "The aim of the Competence Center is to drive forward research and development relating to smart industrial electrical connectivity, the change of industrial infrastructure and the digital description of products", explains Jörg Scheer, Head of the Device and Field Connectivity division at Weidmüller.

This sees Weidmüller expand, in particular, upon its over ten years of cooperation with the CIIT Science-to-Business centre. The Competence Center will also be able to benefit from optimal support thanks to the proximity to the SmartFactoryOWL, the resident institute Fraunhofer Application Center IOSB-INA and the Institute of Industrial Information Technology (inIT) at the OWL University of Applied Sciences, as well as its participation in the "it's OWL" network. Future development will focus on the issue of industrial infrastructure for power, signals and data, as the process of digitalisation is leading to continual changes in business models, products and working processes as well as in the collaboration between employees and with customers. This leads to the creation of new solutions, products, services and business models, which allow for networking along the value chain. "The trend towards digitalisation in industry requires new solutions, even for components that have previously been purely electromechanical in nature. Plug-in connectors are becoming smart and behave intelligently and will take on innovative additional functions in the future, and they have to operate in infrastructure networks that use DC voltage instead of AC voltage for power distribution", says Scheer. "With the Smart Connectivity Competence Center, we are responding to this development and are intensifying the development of smart plug-in connector solutions and infrastructure solutions".

Weidmüller has already been represented at CIIT in Lemgo for many years in the area of technology development, and the employees from the division mentioned above will serve to further boost the company's presence at the centre. In the future, these employees will work together in close collaboration with the on-site research institutes with the aim of developing the technologies to create market-ready solutions in collaboration with customers.
